Automated Deburring and Surface Finishing with NamPower Brushes

Los Angeles, CA (USA) (PRWEB) March 18, 2014

Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM), global leader in surface finishing solutions, is announcing an article in the March 2014 edition of Industrial Machinery Digest that serves as a case study for BRM's NamPower nylon abrasive brushes. Orange Vise, manufacturer of CNC machine vises and quick-fixturing components, is using NamPower brushes to automate surface finishing and deburring operations.

Instead of removing burrs off-line as a secondary process, part manufacturers can use NamPower technology to perform both tasks on-line at the same time. Automated deburring and finishing improves production efficiency by eliminating time-consuming manual operations. It also improves part quality and consistency since machine-based operations are highly repeatable.

NamPower Case Study
Before Orange Vise began using Nam Power abrasive brushes, the parts manufacturer required an employee to inspect each part and remove any burrs by hand. The Orange County company's CNC machine vises are made of different metal materials, and required time-consuming grinding on non-critical surfaces to create a uniform appearance over the workpiece.

Today, Orange Vise is using NamPower brush tools with a high-speed horizontal machining center to achieve a smooth, blended surface finish on machined components. NamPower abrasive disc brushes can also be used with robotic cells and transfer lines. These high-performance industrial brushes work well with cast and ductile iron; mild, stainless, and alloy steels; and titanium and high-nickel alloys.

There are two types of NamPower abrasive disc brushes: dot and turbine. The dot-style brush tools that Orange Vise uses are designed for light deburring, surface finishing, and edge blending. Turbine-style NamPower brushes have a heavier fill density for medium and heavy deburring. Both types of abrasive disc brushes have flexible nylon abrasive filaments bonded to fiber-reinforced thermoplastic base.

NamPower Technology
With their unique combination of ceramic and silicon carbide abrasives, NamPower brushes remove burrs and improve surface finish at the same time. The brush tool's nylon abrasive filaments work like flexible files, conforming to part contours while wiping across part surfaces. As older grains wear, sharp new grains come into contact with the work surface for a consistent deburring action.

Unlike other abrasive disc brushes, NamPower deburring tools allow fluid to flow from the brush center instead of supplying lubrication only from the outside. As BRM's How to Automate Deburring and Surface Finishing video explains, the result is greater cut depths, better cutting action, reduced heat generation, and longer brush life.

NamPower technology includes lightweight tool holders that reduce vibration, improve performance, and extend brush life. Made with a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic that's bonded to a hardened and ground steel shank, these NamPower accessories are rigid and well-balanced. They're also specially designed for use with NamPower's unique flow-through coolant system.
