BRM Announces Cylinder Hones for Automated Bore Finishing and Blending; Flexible Honing Tools Reduce Cycle Times and Improve Surface Finish

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 27, 2013
Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM), maker of Flex-Hone® tools and pioneer of plateau finishing, is announcing cylinder honing tools for automated surface finishing and deburring operations. The Flex-Hone® tool is a flexible, resilient honing tool that improves the surface finish of cylinders and removes cut, torn, and folded metal (burrs) that can impede performance.
Built with a metal stem and flexible nylon abrasive filaments, BRM cylinder hones mount in lathes, mills, drill presses, and electric hand drills. By using flexible honing tools with machine centers, manufacturers can replace off-hand or manual deburring with faster, more efficient, uniform operations. Self-centering and self-aligning to the bore, Flex-Hone® tools are also self-compensating for wear.
Flexible Honing Improves Quality, Speeds Operations
As the Flex-Hone® In-Machine Setup for Surface Finishing and Deburring video explains, flexible hones follow existing bore geometry and will not affect size, ovality, or concentricity. Unlike other automated deburring tools, BRM cylinder hones do not require rigid setups. Flex-Hone® tools in machine centers can be used to surface finish cylinder walls made of various metals, including 6061 and 7075 aluminum.
Automated honing with the Flex-Hone® tool is ideal for bore finishing and blending, as well as cross-hole deburring and port radiusing. By removing the peaks produced by prior machining operations, cylinder honing allows piston rings to seat and seal without damaging their edges. The substantially flat surface that the Flex-Hone® imparts also promotes longer seal life, increases bearing area, and reduces wear.
Plateau Finishing for Optimum Lubrication
By creating a series of uniformly-spaced, oil-retaining grooves, cylinder hones also optimize lubrication while reducing seepage in hydraulics. Industries and applications that use Flex-Hone® technology to solve surface finishing challenges include automotive, aerospace, earth moving equipment, marine, oil and gas, aluminum extrusions, brass instruments, fluid and power, and military and defense.
Available in a 10 different abrasive types and a wide range of grit selections, BRM cylinder hones come in standard diameters ranging from 4-mm to 36 inches. For more information about flexible honing and how automated surface finishing and deburring can save manufacturers time and money, watch the Flex-Hone In-Machine Setup video and download the Flex-Hone® Resource Guide.
About Brush Research Manufacturing
Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM), makers of flexible honing tools and a full line of industrial brushes, is located in Los Angeles, California. Since 1958, BRM has been solving difficult finishing problems with brushing technology. BRM’s Flex-Hone® tool is the standard against which all other surface finishing tools are compared.

Solar flares "sandblasting" the Moon

Solar storms remove a surprisingly large amount of material from the lunar surface, computer simulations have revealed, leading NASA scientists to speculate that solar storms may also be a major factor in atmospheric loss on Mars and other planets. This is the first time researchers have attempted to predict the effects of sun activity on the Moon. Details of the simulations appear in the Journal of Geophysical Research Planets.

According to Rosemary Killen, from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun impact the lunar surface and atoms are ejected in a process called "sputtering." CMEs - a more intense version of the normal solar wind - are effectively a diffuse stream of plasma that's blown outward from the surface of the Sun. A strong CME may contain around a billion tons of plasma moving at up to a million miles per hour.

"The Moon has just the barest wisp of an atmosphere, technically called an exosphere because it is so tenuous, which leaves it vulnerable to CME effects. We found that when this massive cloud of plasma strikes the Moon, it acts like a sandblaster and easily removes volatile material from the surface," explained NASA co-researcher William Farrell. "The model predicts 100 to 200 tons of lunar material could be stripped off the lunar surface during the typical 2-day passage of a CME."

Shot Blasting Machines : Ezine Articles

In Tumblast, a conveyor belt rotates inwards, inside the chamber of the shot blasting machine & the components are loaded on it as per the size & capacity of the machine. The door is than closed. Rotor is switched on for throwing Shots or Grits on the components. By this process, the loaded components get a universal finish. Abrasive medias such as Shots or Grits are continuously fed by the elevator of abrasive media. All the dust extracted in the process goes to the attached dust collector. On completion of desired time period, the door is opened & than the conveyor belt is driven outwards. As a result the components can be removed from the chamber. An automatic loading system can also be attached to the shot / grit blasting machine.

The Tumblast shot / grit blasting machines are available in many sizes, right from a 2 cu ft capacity machine to a 15 & 20 cu ft capacity machines. Some of the sizes are: 20" x 27", 20" x 42", 27" x 36", 30" x 43", 36" x 42", 42" x 42" as well 48" x 48".

Similarly, Hanger model Shot blasting machines are available in Single / Double door type, Centralised hanger type as well a monorail type. In this model, the components are hanged instead of loading on the conveyor belt. Rest of the process is same. The hanger rotates for a universal finish using multiple rotors depending upon requirement. The benefit is that the components do not touch each other in the process of finishing and hence are scratch free.

Swing table model shot blasting machines are suitable for bigger or heavier components or if the smaller parts are to be shot blasted only one side. Many sizes are available from a minimum 36" of table to 120" of table in sngle as well double doors.

Continuous conveyor model shot blasting machines are suitable for smaller components which are to be shot blasted only one side with a single rotor. Multiple sides can be finished by using multiple rotors. Components are fed from one side & removed from the other side duly finished.

The spare parts mostly wearable are made from ni hard or alloy steel to get the maximum life. The main spare parts include the Rotor, Blades, Spring locks, Cage & Impeller, Cage adapter, centre plate, Top segment, Side liners, Round plates as well the conveyor belt. Few precautions are necessary while running the machine.

The Tumblast model of Shot blasting machine if to be used for finishing of smaller components is best suitable and very cost effective. we can be contacted with details of your components for a suitable size & model of shot blasting machine.

Are Your Designer Jeans Making Factory Workers Sick?

There are few things that compare to the comfort and look of a worn-in pair of blue jeans. In fact, the allure of your “favorite pair of jeans” is so enticing that designers have been looking for ways to artificially duplicate it for years.
Even though sandblasting was outlawed in Europe in 1966 many top designers still use it in their foreign factories to give denim a worn, faded look. According to Mother Jones, inhaling silica from the sand used during this treatment process puts factory workers in developing countries at increased risk for a disabling lung disease called silicosis.
Sandblasting is “often performed in small workshops in the informal sector in jeans-producing countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, China, Turkey, Brazil and Mexico, reports the Clean Clothes Campaign. “Almost all of the jeans sold in Europe are produced in these countries. In Turkey alone, 46 documented cases of sandblasters contracting silicosis and dying have been registered. This is likely to be only the tip of the iceberg.”
A few months ago, the Clean Clothes Campaign started a public action concerning the sandblasting of denim. The CCC urged many of the top fashion designers in the world to ban sandblasting in their supply chains, and some, like Levi’s, H&M and C&A got on board immediately. Others, like Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli, have ignored requests to protect worker health.

Oxfam blasts jeans sellers

OXFAM Australia is threatening to take The Just Group to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission unless it stops promoting ''sandblasted'' jeans.

The practice of blasting denim to speed up the faded look is banned in several countries, including Australia, as it causes lung diseases such as silicosis. But it is still widely used in clothing factories in China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other manufacturing hubs. Several denim brands, including Levi's, Esprit and Gucci, have banned sandblasting.

Last month, Just Jeans insisted that sandblasting was not a practice it used, but online catalogues for Jay Jays and Just Jeans continue to promote sandblasted jeans and shorts

Worker deaths linked to sandblasted jeans

BRENDAN TREMBATH: They're popular in a lot of places: sandblasted jeans.
But the aid organisation Oxfam says the manufacturing process can be deadly.
Sandblasting has apparently killed dozens of workers overseas and made many more seriously ill.
Liz Hobday prepared this report.
VOX POP 1: We love fashion.
VOX POP 2: Look at the fashion and see the runway.
VOX POP 3: Pretty excited, you know, Melbourne has such a great fashion culture.
LIZ HOBDAY: Among the high end labels delighting crowds on the runway this week are the well-known brands Just Jeans and Dotti, owned by The Just Group.
Oxfam claims these and other labels owned by the company use sandblasting to fade the jeans they sell.
The executive director of Oxfam Australia, Andrew Hewett.
ANDREW HEWETT: Sandblasting is known to cause silicosis. It's been known to cause deaths.
The company says on one hand that they no longer use sandblasting but at the same time their website is promoting products which have been sandblasted.
LIZ HOBDAY: Michele O'Neil from the Textile Clothing and Footwear Union of Australia is among those who've been campaigning against the practice.
MICHELE O'NEIL: Pretty much the process is what it sounds like. It's workers involved in spraying high pressured sand onto denim.
What happens through that is that they suffer silicosis as a result of ingesting the sand and that is deadly.
LIZ HOBDAY: She says the pulmonary condition has killed dozens of workers overseas.
MICHELE O'NEIL: So recent studies that have been done in Europe, in particular in Turkey, have shown over a period of about five years in Turkey that in fact 50 workers' deaths were attributed to sandblasting.
LIZ HOBDAY: The Just Group says it won't work with manufacturers that use manual sandblasting guns on jeans but because its suppliers are overseas it can't rule out their use.

Top chains are urged to ban sandblasted jeans

Asda, Diesel, Matalan and Primark are among a group of companies being criticised for selling jeans made using sandblasting, which can cause illness or even death.

The pressure group, Labour Behind the Label, said these companies continue to use sandblasting to give denim a "worn" look, despite the danger that silica dust from the sand can get into workers' lungs. British companies including New Look and Marks & Spencer also say they have banned the process. Levi's and H&M stopped all use in December
"Dead workers aren't fashionable," said Sam Maher, co-author of Labour Behind the Label's Killer Jeans report, which will be published on Monday.
